I upgraded to iTunes 12 – only to find that my devices were no longer recognized by the new iTunes.

I went through all the blogs, all the apple troubleshooting – nothing worked.

Usual Suspects

  1. My USB port was fine
  2. my Apple mobile device process was running fine

Finally, I noticed iCLOUD for windows running alongside the iTunes apple mobile device process (in my Task Manager).  I decided to kill that process.

Almost instantly, my device (iPhone 4) was recognized by iTunes.

Solution

So – the solution (at least for me) was to disable (or kill) iCloud for windows. Somehow, it was interfering with iTunes’ ability to recognize a plugged in USB device.
