Why Use S3 (instead of EBS)

The use of AWS S3 storage to store SQL Server backups makes sense

  1.  it is significantly cheaper than EBS
  2.  One can encrypt what’s stored
  3.  One can manage backup file retention and lifecycle using inbuilt functionality.

Map the drive

To make your life easier working with S3 based backups, it would be good to map a local drive to a S3 storage bucket (effectively make it appear like a regular windows drive). Cloudberry Lab’s Drive (server edition – US$ 59.99) lets you easily backup to an S3 storage bucket and then restore a database from it.
