Each SQL server can contain many INSTANCES ( a set of  SQL Server Services).

An instance is either the default, unnamed instance, or it is a named instance. When SQL Server  is installed in the default instance,  the client need only know the server name. The client is not required to specify the INSTANCE name to connect to the SQL Server.
