]]> Basically, Sickle Cell anemia is a disorder of the Haemoglobin cells produced in ADULTs. Foetuses too have their own haemoglobic producer, which effectively shuts down (due to a gene flipping) once the foetus is delivered. This foetal producer only produces healthy, correct shaped haemoglobin (not the sickle cell variety).

What CRSPR does is reverse that gene flip for the foetal producer of haemoglobin. In effect, the foetal producer kicks back in – in adults – and starts replacing the bad (sickle shaped) haemoglobin with the correct shaped ones.

This is nothing short of miraculous. Within a few months, patients start feeling their sickle cell pain disappear. And it stays at bay.
