I made the mistake of resetting my ENV variables for HOME and HOMEDIR – which resulted in

a) My DOS prompt not being able to launch

b) My environment variables (Advanced Settings) not being able to launch.

So -I could not go back and DELETE the ENV variables that I had incorrectly set.

The workaround is to launch the following EXE 

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe

This should launch the ENVIRONMENT Variables configuration screen. Now, you can delete the incorrect variables – and you should be back in business.
