Does Adobe Acrobat Fill & Sign Encrypt a PDF?

No. Using Adobe Acrobat’s Fill & Sign feature does not, by itself, encrypt a PDF.

When you use Fill & Sign → Add Signature, Acrobat places a representation of your signature onto the document.
That signature may be typed, drawn, or created from an image of your handwritten signature.

However, this process does not automatically make the PDF confidential or cryptographically protect the document.

What Does Fill & Sign Actually Do?

Fill & Sign is primarily designed to make it easy to complete forms and place a visible signature on a PDF.

For example, you might:

  • Fill in your name and address
  • Add dates
  • Check boxes
  • Add initials
  • Place an image of your handwritten signature

But the PDF generally remains accessible according to whatever security settings it already had.

Someone who receives the file may still be able to open, copy, print, or modify it unless additional PDF security controls have been applied.

Fill & Sign vs. Digital Signatures vs. PDF Encryption

These three Acrobat features solve very different problems.

1. Fill & Sign Signature

A Fill & Sign signature is primarily a visual representation of your signature.

For example, you might scan your handwritten signature, convert it to a transparent PNG, and use that image inside Acrobat Fill & Sign.

Visually, it may look exactly like your handwritten signature.

But the presence of that image does not mean the PDF has been encrypted or cryptographically signed.

2. Certificate-Based Digital Signature

A certificate-based digital signature is substantially different.

Instead of simply placing an image on the page, Acrobat uses a digital identity containing a private key and certificate to cryptographically sign the document.

If the document is modified after signing, Acrobat can detect that the signed content has changed.

Depending on the certificate used, the recipient may also be able to verify information about the identity of the signer.

Someone may still be able to open and read the PDF unless separate encryption has been enabled.

3. PDF Encryption and Password Protection

PDF encryption addresses a different security requirement: confidentiality.

You can use Acrobat security features to require a password before someone can open the PDF.

The exact sequence can depend on your workflow and how the recipient needs to validate the signature.

What About an Image of a Handwritten Signature?

An image of your handwritten signature can be convenient and professional-looking.

But the image itself provides no encryption.

It also does not inherently provide cryptographic proof that you personally placed the signature on the document.

Which Method Should You Use?

The right method depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

  • For ordinary forms: Fill & Sign may be sufficient.
  • For contracts or documents where integrity matters:
    consider a certificate-based digital signature.
  • For confidential documents:
    use PDF encryption or another secure delivery mechanism.
  • For both authenticity and confidentiality:
    use digital signing together with appropriate encryption and secure delivery.
