Although I highlight seven  distinct areas where blockchain can deliver a knockout, a couple of these are more than killer apps. They address foundational issues with blockchains and, while there is no unique solution to these (yet), suffice it to say that the person who solves either one of these two challenges will encounter ‘Satoshi’ level fame.

One of these two overarching issues is no stranger to blockchain followers – that of scalability (of individual transactions as well as the network as a whole).

For a full understanding of unique solutions to the scalability problem, you’ll just have to attend my blockchain workshop.  Suffice it to say that no amount of blocksize increment, be it 8 MB or a 100 MB or even a 1000 MB, will solve the scalability problem. This is because the bitcoin ledger, by definition, needs to store EVERY SINGLE transaction that ever takes place. If you just think of the number of financial transactions that you INDIVIDUALLY conduct each day (pay the electric bill, fill gas, buy a sandwich….) and imagine each and every one of those being stored on the chain, (and multiply that by a few billion spenders), you understand why a blocksize of any size will not work.

So, one has to look elsewhere. Certainly, non blockchain data structures such as HashGraphs and Tangles are gaining a bit of popularity. However, more importantly, layered architectures built on top of blockchain are more likely going to be the real winners of this battle. Lightning Network and Sidechains are two important developments in this direction.

What, you ask, is the other killer use case that will make you as famous as Satoshi Nakamoto? Ahhhh…..well, come to my workshop and you will understand why this problem needs to be solved before any other blockchain revolution can take place.

Here’s a teaser around some things that will look completely different 20 years from now:
