I wrote previously about cloud pre-migration assessment tools (Movere, Cloudamize..).

Once you are in the cloud, you would need something called a ‘Cost Optimization’ tool.

These tools can range from simply providing consumption costs to actual resource automation, including:

Cloud Health – Automated cloud policies include:

  • When projected costs are about to exceed a monthly budget – set notifications
  • Disable the launch of a Virtual Machine if its CPU  exceeds a certain threshold
  • Terminate a Virtual Machine with incorrect / unauthorized open ports
  • Revoke IAM access to an account that’s logged in from a non-conforming IP address
  • Schedule on/off times for non-production assets
  • Switch Reserved Instances between Regional and Availability Zone scopes
  • Set  alerts about data within frequent access storage volumes that haven’t been accessed recently
