If your email boxes are running out of space on your iPhone, there is a way you can free up a lot of space. This applies to the default iCloud mailbox as well as to any others configured on your iPhone (gmail app etc.)

Login in iCloud.com. If it is from your iPhone, it will just require a passcode.

Go into Mail –> Settings (wheel) –> Preferences –> Composing .

You should see a check box for Mail Drop for attachments. Enable it.

This will prevent large attachments from going back and forth by default – and instead store them on an iCloud Server. On request, these individual attachments can be downloaded.
