Do I need to send (or even possess) a private key to request an SSL Certificate?

Believe it or not, no – you do not need to even possess the private key to fill out a CSR Request.

You can still get the SSL Certificate issued, but it will be meaningless without the private key. In order to USE that certificate anywhere (to sign or encrypt), you will need the private key. All the Certificate is is a fancy version of the public key – which you ALREAYD had (and the world can see).
